RugbyNY / USA Rugby Strength & Conditioning Clinic

RugbyNY in conjunction with the USA Rugby Coaching Development Program is pleased to offer the IRB Strength and Conditioning Certification course to coaches interested in developing basic knowledge and understanding of practical skills. The course will provide an ideal opportunity for coaches to increase their understanding of rugby training and its application to coaching.

The Strength and Conditioning course comprises six modules covering several topics:

Long Term Player Development Pathway
Functional screening
Anatomical adaptation
Demands of the Game
Principles of Training
Speed and intermittent sprint endurance
Periodization Recovery

The primary aim of the course is to help coaches prepare a player to safely play rugby and reduce the risk of injury. The course breaks down the specific demands of rugby and provides the strength and conditioning framework to meet those demands. The course consists of two parts: online course work and an in-person assessment.

Coaches who complete the course will earn 10 Professional Development Credits. Professional Development Credits are necessary to maintain an active USA Rugby Coaching Certification.

RugbyNY will be hosting two camps, one in the Buffalo area and another in the Albany area. Each camp will consist of a Friday evening session and a second day-long session on Saturday.

The Buffalo camp will be led by USA Rugby Men's National Team Head Coach Mike Tolkin. The Albany camp witll be led by USA Rugby High School All-Americans Assistant Coach Paul Barford. Both coaches will be assisted by local senior club and college coaches.

The cost for both of the camps is $30 per player. Payment is required at check-in prior to the Friday evening session, cash or check only.

Albany, NY - The 2013 Annual general Meeting of RugbyNY will be held January 26, 2013 in the Large Auditorium of the Albany Public Library. The meeting begins at 11:00am and is expected to run until 4:30pm.

The keynote workshop topic/speaker is Dr. Hamish Kerr, Player Welfare Training for Coaches. Dr. Kerr is the Pediatric and Adult Sports Medicine Program Director at Albany Medical College and a medical consultant to USA Rugby. Dr. Kerr has also worked closely with Capital District Youth Rugby over the past 4 years, including providing baseline ImPACT testing to players free of charge. He will also report on the IRB medical conference he attended last month in Dublin.

Board of Directors – There are several positions up for election this coming year. The three At-Large Directors are up for election and, with the upcoming resignation of the Western Director, there will another Director position to fill. Directors serve for a two year term. The At-Large Directors will serve for calendar years 2013-2014. The Western Director position will be up for election again in 2014 with the other three regional Directors, Central/North, Capital District and Downstate. Nominations can be accepted up to the election at the AGM. Current At-Large Directors are Mike Hodgins, John Durant and Bruno Faria. Bruno has expressed his desire to step down from the Board. The current Regional Directors are completing the first year of a 2 year term and are Fred Bressette (Western NY), Tammy Morgan (Central/North), Rob Sliwinski (Capital District) and Rosalie MacGowan (Downstate).

Executive Committee – The entire Executive Committee is up for election this coming year. This includes the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer and the term will run for 2 years (2013 and 2014). Nominations can be accepted up to election at the AGM. The current Executive Committee consists of Rob Sliwinski (President), Rosalie MacGowan (Vice President), John Durant (Secretary) and Fred Bressette (Treasurer). Fred will be stepping down from the Treasurer position this year.

Committees - Rugby NY has several standing committees to assist in the operation of the organization. The Executive Committee appoints committee members and each of these committees has a chair elected by its membership. The current Committee chairs are:
Competition – Bruno Faria (Bruno is stepping down as Chair so the chair needs to be filled)
Communication – Fred Bressette
Game Development – Tammy Morgan
Organizational Development – John Durant
There is no limit to the number of members who can serve on these committees. Recently, we have had several people step up to serve on the Competition Committee and regional league committees. Thanks to all who have volunteered.

We need more members to serve on the Board, Executive Committee and standing committees. We all have much we would like to see happen in youth rugby, but to do that we need your help. Quite frankly, we are all limited by the time we have to put towards our own teams and Rugby NY Still, Rugby NY needs more people to be involved to improve our organization and grow the game. Ideally, no one would serve at multiple levels. Please consider serving Rugby NY at any of these levels or finding someone from your club to serve.

RESCHEDULED: USA Rugby Technical Sevene Clinic (Buffalo)

The Buffalo Rugby Club in conjunction with USA Rugby is holding a 7s clinic at Delaware Park in Buffalo on August 4th. This event has been rescheduled from its original July 14th date.

The full day clinic will cover skills specific to the game of sevens and will be facilitated by former USA Eagle and current Assistant USA Men’s Coach Jason Raven. Jason will also be joined by Mike Hodgins, who will facilitate as the IRB Educator.

USA Rugby Technical Clinics have been designed to instruct coaches and players on the principles of rugby through a player-centered approach. It is the aim of USA Rugby to provide a high level of knowledge and experience to coaches and players throughout the United States.

The Buffalo Rugby Club and USA Rugby recognize the growing popularity of rugby in Western New York and through clinics like this one aim to enhance the level of rugby in our area.

USAR has trained USA Eagle’s, current and former, as well as coaching staff to deliver the best technical experience for both players and coaches. Teamed up with an IRB licensed Educator, by the end of the clinic each participant will leave with a wealth of knowledge that will continue to help us develop and grow rugby in Western New York.

The clinic will be open to both men and women of high school and college age and is a great opportunity for younger rugby players in the Western New York region to develop the skills needed to succeed in the fast paced sport of rugby 7’s.

USA Rugby Coaching Certification Workshops

The USA Rugby Coaching Development Program is offering Introducing Rugby and Developing Rugby Skills workshops in Albany, NY March 24-25, 2012.

The USA Rugby Coach Development Program (CDP) is designed to develop coaches and provide them with the latest coaching tools and techniques. Through better coaches and coaching we can develop better players and improve the game at all levels. USA Rugby Coach Certification is a combination of online learning and face-to-face workshops that are designed to give coaches opportunities to demonstrate their skills and competency in a variety of coaching tasks.

At Randalls Island, NY

The New York Rugby Club will host the third annual Rugby NY Championships the weekend of May 27-28. Teams from across New York will meet to at the Randalls Island Rugby Complex in New York City to decide 2012 Boys & Girls champions. The competition will bring together top teams from the Upstate, Met NY, Capital District and North Country leagues to decide who reigns supreme in NYS.

"The Randall's Island facility is one of the finest rugby facilities on the East coast and we are delighted to have our premier event there this year" said Rugby NY Compititions Committee chairman Bruno Faria.

Boys Championships

Boys teams will be split into tiers of four teams each. The top 4 seeds will play in Tier 1, seeds 5-8 will play in Tier 2. Each team will play a semifinal match on Sunday May 27th. Tier 1 semifinal winners will meet Monday May 28th for the Rugby NY Championship. The remaining teams will play on Monday to determine 3rd thru 8th places. Each team will play two matches.

Girls Championships

The top team from each of the four regions in NYS will qualify for the 2012 Girls NYS Championships. Semifinal matches will be played on Sunday, May 27th with the championship and consolation matches on Monday, May 28th. Each team will play two matches.

USA Rugby and the New England Rugby Union are presenting the 2011 New England Rugby’s Coaching Confernce at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Mass. August 13-14, 2011

USA Rugby's Coach Development Program (CDP) is designed to develop coaches and provide them with the latest coaching tools and techniques. Through better coaches and coaching we can develop better players and improve the game at all levels. USA Rugby Coach Certification is a combination of online learning and face-to-face workshops that are designed to give coaches opportunities to demonstrate their skills and competency in a variety of coaching tasks.

Introducing Rugby Workshop: This course is designed for coaches that spend most of their time introducing the game to new players. It is ideal for high school head coaches and college and club assistant coaches. The focus is being able to implement the fundamentals of the game to players that have little or no experience.

Developing Rugby Skills Workshop: This course is designed for coaches focused on working with players with experience and aspiring to help those players play at a higher level. The course work is ideal for head coaches and those that are involved in club and all-star play. There is an emphasis on identifying key factors, practice planning, game sense and skill development.

Tickets
Tickets are available at the gate and are $6 for adults, $3 for high school & grade school students, free for UB students with UB ID.
